Shout Out to Our Early Intervention Teachers

Shout out to our Early Intervention Teachers during Public Education Week 2025! This week (4–8 August 2025) is dedicated to celebrating educators, and we want to highlight the unsung heroes who work with our littlest learners. Early Intervention Teachers play a crucial role in igniting the potential of young children by providing specialised support during the formative early years. These dedicated professionals bring energy, expertise and compassion to help children with developmental delays or disabilities thrive at home, in preschools and in the community.

The Role of Early Intervention Teachers

Early Intervention Teachers are highly trained professionals – each has completed a university degree (or equivalent) and is registered with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). They specialise in working with infants and young children who have developmental delays or disabilities, using play-based learning and everyday activities as opportunities for growth. By meeting children in their natural environments – whether at the family home, early childhood centre, or local playground – these teachers foster development in real-life contexts.

Through play and routine, Early Intervention Teachers help children build skills in communication, movement, social interaction, and self-care. They weave therapeutic strategies into daily routines and coach families on how to support learning during regular activities. By collaborating closely with parents, caregivers, and other professionals, they ensure each child’s learning is consistent and tailored to their unique goals. The result is meaningful, individualised progress for the child – whether it’s saying new words, taking first steps or learning to share and play with peers. Every small victory is a step toward greater confidence and inclusion.

All of our Early Childhood Intervention Teachers work collaboratively with community-based preschools, long day care centres, and schools to smooth children’s transitions and embed inclusive practices in classrooms. By working closely with educators across these settings, we help ensure children with additional needs are well supported to thrive in kindergarten and beyond.

A Holistic and Inclusive Approach – Our 40-Year Journey

It’s not just the teachers’ qualifications that make a difference, but also our organisation’s approach. Early Links has a proud 40-year history of supporting children and young people in our local community by delivering personalised, holistic, and inclusive allied health and early intervention teaching services. Over four decades, we have built a model of support that is family-centred and evidence-based, recognising that helping a child means embracing their whole world – their family, culture and community.

Today, our interdisciplinary team of professionals (including Early Intervention Teachers as well as therapists across speech, occupational, physio, art and more) delivers evidence-based, collaborative support to people of all ages – at home, in schools, centres, and community spaces. We continually update our practices with the latest research and tailor our services to each child’s needs. For us, inclusion isn’t just a buzzword; it’s at the heart of everything we do. We work hand-in-hand with families, childcare educators, and health specialists to create environments where every child can participate and belong.

In 2023, we began a new chapter by merging with ConnectAbility Australia, a leading NSW not-for-profit organisation that has promoted inclusion and connection for people with disabilities since 1992. This milestone merger brought together more than 70 years of collective experience in high-quality, person-centred disability, family, and community support. Together as one united service, we now support over 1,780 individuals of all ages throughout the Hunter and Central Coast communities. By combining our strengths, we have reinforced our shared values – relationships, excellence, strength, passion, experience, community and trust – which guide us in every interaction. We remain committed to welcoming, listening to, and advocating for every person we support, from the youngest child to older adults, honouring their goals, strengths and individuality.

Partnering with NSW Public Education

As we celebrate Public Education Week, we also acknowledge the importance of partnerships that bridge community services and the school system. Early Links is proud to work in collaboration with the NSW Department of Education. Currently we are contracted by the NSW Department of Education to provide the Sector Capacity Building Program to over 200 preschools in the Hunter New England, Northern NSW and Mid North Coast regions. This program enables our specialist Early Childhood Intervention Teachers to work with community-based preschools and their staff to strengthen inclusive practices and increase their capacity to support children with disabilities. Our teachers achieve this by modelling and coaching staff, delivering professional development on inclusive practices and strategies, assisting with school transition planning for children with disabilities, and guiding staff through processes such as funding applications.

It’s a true team effort: our specialists complement the great work of classroom teachers and learning support staff, creating a more inclusive educational experience for everyone. Through this collaboration, we echo the spirit of “ignite your potential” – the theme of Public Education Week 2025 – by lighting the spark of learning early on. When early intervention professionals and school educators unite, every child is better supported to learn, grow, and thrive.

Honouring Our Unsung Heroes

This week, join us in giving a big shout out to the Early Intervention Teachers and allied professionals who devote their passion to our youngest children. Their work often happens behind the scenes – in living rooms, on play mats, or in preschool sandpits – but the impact is profound and lasting. By empowering families and building children’s skills step by step, early intervention educators lay the foundation for success in school and in life.

Public Education Week is about celebrating all educators, including those outside the typical classroom, who contribute to a child’s learning journey. We thank our Early Intervention Teachers for their expertise, dedication, and heart. They truly help ignite each child’s potential from the very start, showing that with the right support, every child can flourish.
