For families in Maitland, finding a safe and welcoming space where children can explore, create, and make friends – while parents and carers connect too – can make a huge difference in the early years. That’s exactly what Early Links Playgroup offers every Thursday morning.
Free, inclusive and full of fun, playgroup welcomes all children and provides extra support for those with additional needs. With activities ranging from messy play and art to sensory experiences and outdoor adventures, there’s something for every child to enjoy.
The playgroup is run by Amy Cashmore, Early Intervention Teacher, and Robyn Evans, Occupational Therapist. We caught up with Amy Cashmore, who runs the group, to learn more about what makes our playgroup so special.
For someone who has never been before, how would you describe Early Links Playgroup?
Playgroup is a relaxed and friendly space where children can play at their own pace, try new things, and just be themselves. It’s also a place where families can connect with others who are going through the same stage of life.
What makes the playgroup inclusive and supportive for children with additional needs?
Every child is welcome, and activities are designed to suit different ages and abilities. Families don’t have to explain or apologise – they can simply join in knowing they’ll be supported and accepted.
What types of activities do the children enjoy most each week?
It’s always a mix! Playdough is always a big hit, with children rolling, cutting, and creating their own masterpieces. The train set is another favourite, encouraging teamwork and problem-solving as the children build tracks and share carriages. And in the home corner, imaginary play really takes off — from cooking up feasts to running pretend shops, the children love stepping into different roles and bringing their ideas to life.
How does playgroup help children learn and develop through play?
Play is how children learn best. At playgroup, they’re developing their social skills, communication, problem-solving, and creativity. Activities also build fine and gross motor skills in a fun and natural way. Most importantly, children gain confidence as they try new things and play alongside others.
What do parents and carers often say they love most about the group?
Many parents say they value the welcoming, judgment-free environment. They love that it’s a chance to spend quality time with their children while also connecting with other adults. For families who may be new to the area, it’s a wonderful way to build friendships and support networks.
Why is it important for families to have a free and accessible playgroup like this in Maitland?
Raising children can be expensive, so having a free option means more families can join without worrying about cost. Accessibility also means families don’t need to book or commit, they can just show up when it suits them.
Can you tell us a little about the atmosphere on a typical Thursday morning?
It’s lively and full of laughter! You’ll hear children chatting and playing, parents connecting, and lots of creativity happening at each activity station. There’s always a buzz of excitement as the children move between activities, and a real sense of community among the families.
What do you personally enjoy most about running the playgroup?
I love seeing the joy on children’s faces as they discover something new, and the sense of relief parents feel when they find a space where they belong. Watching friendships form, both between children and between parents, is really special.
Do you have a favourite memory or moment from playgroup that stands out?
There are so many! One of my favourites was when a little friend came every week, needing to be carried in by Mum and would never leave her side. Now she walks in independently and goes straight to play. Those little moments of growth really stand out.
What would you say to a parent or carer who is thinking about coming along for the first time?
Come and give it a try! You and your child will be welcomed with open arms. There’s no pressure, no expectations and no need to book. Just bring along your morning tea and water, and be ready for some fun!
